Job Description

As an Academic Instructor for Functional Skills Qualification in Mathematics and English, your primary responsibility is to assess and support learners in developing essential numeracy and literacy skills. You will provide high-quality formative and summative feedback, guide learners through practical application of mathematical and English concepts, and ensure they meet qualification standards. This role involves close collaboration with the Programme Manager and internal teams to deliver an engaging and effective learning experience for diverse learners.

Key Responsibilities:

Daily:

  • Address learner queries promptly and provide supportive instruction in Mathematics and English modules.
  • Deliver clear, constructive, and actionable feedback on learner assignments, practical tasks, and assessments within set deadlines.
  • Communicate with learners to clarify feedback, explain concepts from whole numbers to data handling, and guide reading, writing, and communication skills.

Weekly:

  • Collaborate with the Programme Manager to prepare documentation for internal standardisation and quality assurance.
  • Support curriculum alignment by reviewing and adapting teaching materials for Maths (e.g., number systems, measures, data) and English (e.g., speaking, reading, writing).
  • Engage in departmental meetings to discuss learner progress, instructional strategies, and challenges in functional skills delivery.

Monthly:

  • Participate in internal and external quality assurance (EQA/IQA) processes for Functional Skills qualifications.
  • Contribute to academic audits, portfolio reviews, and compliance reporting.
  • Coordinate with other teams (Admissions, Student Support, IT) to ensure smooth delivery and learner progression.

Skills in Use:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to explain complex mathematical and English concepts simply and effectively.
  • Proven experience in tutoring, assessing, and providing feedback for Functional Skills, Adult Numeracy/Literacy, or GCSE Mathematics/English.
  • Strong understanding of the Functional Skills curriculum, including assessment procedures for awarding bodies.
  • Ability to manage learner data, track progress, and handle administrative documentation efficiently.
  • Proficiency in using digital learning platforms, virtual classrooms, and tools to support remote delivery of Maths and English.
  • Patience, empathy, and the ability to engage and motivate adult learners with diverse starting points.

What You Will Need

  • Bachelor's degree in Education, Mathematics, English, or a related field (required).
  • Minimum of 1-2 years of experience in teaching, tutoring, or assessing Functional Skills, GCSE Mathematics/English, or Adult Basic Skills.
  • A recognised teaching qualification (e.g., PGCE, CertEd, AET) or assessor award (e.g., A1, CAVA) is highly preferred.
  • Excellent command of English, with outstanding grammatical and numerical accuracy.
  • Experience with learner-centered approaches and adapting materials for varied learning needs is an advantage.
