Job Description

As an Academic Instructor for Sports and Fitness programmes, your primary responsibility is to assess and support learners throughout their academic and professional development journey. You will provide high-quality formative and summative feedback, assist with internal and external verification processes, and ensure learners receive timely academic and practical guidance. This role involves close collaboration with the Programme Manager, internal teams, and awarding bodies to uphold academic and vocational standards, and to deliver a positive and impactful learner experience.

Key Responsibilities:

Daily:

  • Address learner queries promptly and provide academic and vocational support across all Sports and Fitness modules.
  • Deliver clear, constructive, and actionable feedback on learner assignments, projects, and practical assessments within set deadlines.
  • Communicate with learners to clarify feedback, learning objectives, assessment criteria, and practical application of theory.

Weekly:

  • Collaborate with the Programme Manager to prepare documentation for internal quality assurance and standardisation meetings.
  • Support curriculum alignment and relevance by reviewing teaching, learning, and practical training materials.
  • Engage in departmental discussions to address academic challenges, learner performance trends, and strategic development in sport and active leisure.

Monthly:

  • Participate in internal and external quality assurance (EQA/IQA) processes specific to sports and fitness awarding bodies
  • Contribute to academic audits, learner portfolio evaluations, and compliance reporting, ensuring integration of equality, diversity, health, safety, and welfare principles.
  • Coordinate with other functional teams (Admissions, Quality Assurance, Student Support) to maintain high standards in academic delivery and learner progression.

Skills in Use:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to interact effectively with learners, colleagues, and external stakeholders in sport and leisure.
  • Proven experience in tutoring, assessing, and providing academic feedback for Sports, Fitness, or related vocational qualifications.
  • In-depth understanding of quality assurance procedures related to sports and fitness awarding bodies.
  • Ability to manage learner performance data, track practical competencies, and handle administrative academic documentation.
  • Proficiency in using digital learning platforms, virtual simulation tools, and remote delivery methods for sport and fitness education.
  • Strong leadership, relationship-building, and conflict resolution skills applicable to a sport and active leisure context.

What You Will Need

  • Bachelor's degree in Sports Science, Physical Education, Fitness Management, or a directly related field (required).
  • Minimum of 1-2 years of experience in tutoring, assessing, and providing academic/practical support within sports, fitness, or active leisure education.
  • Experience in curriculum development, practical programme design, or community-based sport/physical activity delivery is highly preferred.
  • Possession of or working towards a relevant Master's degree (e.g., MSc in Sports Science, Sports Coaching) or higher-level vocational assessor awards (e.g., A1, CAVA) is an added advantage.
  • Excellent command of English.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of key industry areas such as strategic development, leadership, equality and diversity, health and safety protocols, and community facilitation in sport.
